Cellulite
- that familiar puckered, dimply skin that commonly appears on the hips, buttocks and other areas -- is not caused by being overweight, as many people think. The condition is due to a combination of tightened connective tissue in the skin and excess fatty tissue. These connective tissues, called septa, attach the top layer of our skin to deep muscles. When these tissues weaken or become less flexible, the septae tend to pull down on the surface of the skin, creating dimples. And it's those dimples that produce the orange-peel look of cellulite. Why these connective tissues tighten is still under investigation. Circulation, genetics and age are commonly thought to be culprits, as are the hormonal changes which take place during pregnancy or menopause. Until those reasons are better understood, there will be no permanent treatment for cellulite. There are, however, a few procedures that can help reduce the appearance of cellulite.
The most popular and effective treatment is Endermologie, a FDA approved procedure which effectively targets and treats localized, trapped fat that is resistant to diet and exercise. It fights that dimpled, "orange peel" look of cellulite by temporarily improving local circulation.
If you're considering Endermologie, the following information will provide you with a good introduction to the procedure. For more detailed information about how this procedure may help you, we recommend that you consult a plastic surgeon with experience in cellulite treatment.

| What are some
of the most common benefits of cellulite treatment? |
Endermologie can renew skin tone, making it softer and suppler. In combination with exercise, Endermologie can help achieve younger, smoother skin faster than exercise alone. The procedure stimulates circulation throughout the skin making it feel smooth and soft. Experimental studies suggest that the treatment helps the body form new collagen-the protein found most abundantly in your skin. Although frequently performed as a stand-alone treatment, Endermologie can be very helpful for patients experiencing skin rippling after liposuction.

| What will happen
at the initial consultation? |
During the consultation, your doctor will talk with you about the changes you would like to make in your appearance. Your doctor will explain the different options available to you, the procedure itself, and its risks and limitations.
Your doctor will begin by recording your medical history, and give you specific instructions on how to maximize the effects of the procedure.
Take this opportunity to ask all the questions you have about the procedure. Learning everything you can about your options, risks and benefits is the key to making an informed decision. See Questions to ask your doctor.

| How are cellulite
treatments (Endodermologie) performed? |
Endermologie is a non-surgical deep massage technique. It involves the use of an externally applied suction with 2 rotating rollers in the hand piece through which suction is applied to the skin. The Cellu M6® is the only machine in the world used for Endermologie treatments. LPG® has exclusive rights to this machine and to the treatment protocols.
The technician rolls the gentle suction over most parts of the outer skin that are not too curved. This suction lifts the skin, while two active, motorized rollers create a symmetrical skin fold by compressing the affected tissue between the two rollers. How Endermologie works is that it effectively mobilizes (frees) the targeted, subcutaneous fat to make it available for elimination and simultaneously evens the surface of the skin. It is not recommended as the sole treatment for those with marked excess fat. Patients should be aware that no fat is removed and you should not lose any weight as a result of Endermologie alone. However, unlike liposuction, the Endermologie technique is not invasive. The effect is to gently pull on the surface of the skin. The suction likely pulls on the tethers and loosens or stretches them.
During treatment, leotard type garments are worn to minimize bruising. However, many patients find the technique is quite comfortable, much like a pleasant and relaxing massage. The treatment sessions averages about 35 minutes and is usually performed at least twice to three times a week. The effects of Endermologie are temporary and require recurring treatments in order to maintain results.
After multiple treatments (as many as 10 to 15) the end result is much the same as one liposuction treatment for those with minimal to moderate excess fat to start with. If you are one of the fortunate patients to have a good result, you will likely need to keep returning for Endermologie treatments in order to maintain it.
