 Liposuction candidates

Most people are actually good candidates for liposuction. A good candidate for liposuction must have realistic expectations about what the procedure can and cannot do for them, additionally candidates should be physically healthy and psychologically stable, and have realistic expectations. Liposuction is not a weight loss technique, or a solution for obesity. It is also not an effective treatment for cellulite (see cellulite treatment), a condition that gives your skin an uneven, dimpled appearance. However, liposuction is a good procedure for spot reduce fat reduction.

Both men and women can be excellent candidates for liposuction. Approximately 75% of patients are female and they most commonly have liposuction performed on the belly, the buttocks and thighs. About 25% of patients are men, the most common location for liposuction in men are the "love handles".

Another issue is age of the candidate. While it is not age is not a major consideration, it is important for older patients to realize that because of diminished skin elasticity, they may not be able to achieve the same results as younger patients with tighter skin. Patients over 40 must recognize that skin contraction is less likely and loose skin can result. And some surgeons will not operate on patients with inelastic skin.

However, liposuction is a surgical procedure, and not everyone is a good candidate for surgery. patients with stretch marks and cellulite do not get as good a result as others without these conditions. In most cases patient with clotting disorders, untreated hernias in the area of surgery, and obesity are not candidates for surgery. Patient who suffer from serious illness, both physical and emotional, may not be suitable for surgery.

In summary, the best candidates for liposuction:

  • Are in good health
  • Are within 25 lbs. of his or her ideal weight
  • Bothered by these fatty areas, and is motivated to get rid of these problem areas once and for all
  • Have had no previous surgery in the area where liposuction is desired
  • Have firm, elastic skin
  • Do not have frequent fluctuations in weight
  • Desire reshaping and not weight loss
  • Do not have significant medical problems such as diabetes, heart or lung disease, or poor circulation
  • Are psychologically stable
  • Do not smoke
  • Are accepting of any limitations, as discussed with surgeon.
  • Are well informed about the procedure
  • Hold realistic expectations about the outcome
  • Exercises regularly
The above is only a partial list of the criteria that your surgeon will consider in determining whether or not this procedure is appropriate for you. Be sure to discuss the procedure thoroughly with your doctor prior to the procedure. Remember, liposuction can help enhance your appearance and boost your self confidence, but it won't necessarily change your looks to match your ideal image.
